Bhubaneswar, March 12: The British Council is all set to organise a seminar for students and parents to help them gain information on various undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes in the UK.

The seminar — Great UK Education Seminar — will be held at the Hotel Mayfair Lagoon on March 13 between 4pm and 6pm. Aspiring students will learn about various aspects of the student life in the UK, student visas, IELTS scores, various programme requirements and so on. On the occasion, they will also be able to have sessions with the alumni who will share their experiences of studying in the UK.

Speaking to newspersons today, Sujata Sen, director of the east India zone of the British Council, said that an increasing number of students from Odisha had been travelling to the UK for higher studies.

“The numbers are rising every year,” she said, though she could not provide the exact figures. She informed that Odia students who choose to study in the UK have been choosing subjects such as law, engineering, art, design and bioscience.

On the occasion, Sen also spoke about the “Great” scholarship programme, which offers around 370 scholarships worth almost 1 million British pounds for 260 undergraduate and postgraduate courses in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

A booklet, titled the Great Careers Guide, was also launched on the occasion, featuring articles on higher education in the UK.

“The aim is to welcome India’s top talent to gain high quality education and overall experience in the form of the rich history, art, culture and landscapes of the UK,” said Sen.

“The seminar is designed to showcase why UK makes for an ideal student destination and will provide information on studying and student life and culture in the UK. Interested candidates will be able to speak to the representatives of the British Council and learn more about their areas of interest. They will also get a chance to watch a short film that captures life-changing experience of UK education through the voices of students currently studying in the UK,” she added.

The UK gets more than 400,000 overseas students to their institutions annually, of which almost 30,000 are from India. The team will also visit selected schools and colleges in Bhubaneswar to let them know more about the scholarships and opportunities for higher learning in the UK.
