Cuttack, March 30: A state-of-the-art modular operating theatre to facilitate renal transplant procedure will be inaugurated at SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Health minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak will inaugurate two modular operating theatres, the first of its kind in any state-run health care facility in the state, here on Wednesday.
These modular operating theatres have a laminar airflow system aimed at keeping the operation theatre area bacteria-free. The air booster connected to the modular operating theatre set-up swipes the wound of the patient during operation thus maintaining a clear air. Usually, there is a flow of air from the top and side creating almost zero bacteria zone around the operating theatre.
"The modular operating theatre complex built over nearly 4,000sqft has been developed by the state government at a cost of Rs 1.72 crore," said Datteswar Hota, head of the urology department.
The complex will come as a major boost to the ongoing renal transplant programme at SCB as the surgeries can be performed in a high-tech manner. The chances of infection acquired from the operating theatre during or after surgery will be greatly reduced.
So far, 67 kidney transplants have been conducted successfully after the much-awaited renal transplant was started at the SCB in 2012. Sources said around 20 to 25 kidney transplant operations were being conducted at the SCB every year since only two cases were being performed in a month. "With the state-of-the-art modular operating theatre, the number of kidney transplants can be increased to nearly 50 a year and the backlog can be cleared," Hota said.
The modular operating theatre has a central control panel to control humidity, temperature, medical gas level, timer, fire alarm system and many other safety features.
The entire complex has been designed along with a clean corridor, surgeon's lounge, anaesthesia room and a special inbuilt central sterilisation and storage department.
An SCB official that the state government had also sanctioned Rs 86.11 lakh for the construction of a six-bed high dependency unit for providing immediate post surgery treatment to patients undergoing renal transplant.
The high dependency unit will be attached to the modular OT complex will provide advance post surgery care to the donors. There are also plans for a high dependency unit for the urology department, which conducts 400 surgeries every month.
