Baripada: A 22-year-old woman of Rairangpur, who was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Jamshedpur after suffering critical burn injuries, succumbed to the injuries on Saturday night.
Family members of the victim had alleged that her father-in-law raped her and to suppress the crime he had set her on fire. Besides, family members of the victim had alleged that her in-laws were torturing her for dowry.
Police confirmed the death of the victim and said that the prime accused, Gopal Khemka, has been arrested while the other accused were absconding. The cops said the dying statement of the victim could not be recorded.
"Although a requisition was submitted at the hospital to obtain her dying declaration yet it could not be recorded. She had suffered 87 per cent burn injuries and her condition deteriorated subsequently. She died around the midnight," said Rairangpur sub divisional police officer Amulya Kumar Dhir.
"A case has been registered against the prime accused based on the complaint lodged by the victim's father, Dillip Agrawal," said inspector of Rairangpur police station Pradeep Majhi.
According to the police sources, the victim got married in 2015. The Khemkas are an established family of builders in Rairangpur area. The Agarwal family too has a well-established business in Sundargarh.
Family members of the victim alleged her husband and other family members repeatedly tortured her physically and mentally.
Around three months ago, she encountered sexual advances by her father-in-law, when other family members were not at home. Though the victim had brought the matter to the notice of her husband, he advised her not to disclose the matter to anyone. She also narrated her ordeal to her brother through text messages. Yesterday, she was sexually assaulted by him and set ablaze.
The incident came to light after a few attendants at a hospital in Rairangpur informed the local police about it.
