Assembly budget session adjourned

Bhubaneswar: The budget session of the Assembly was adjourned sine die by Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat on Friday. The annual budget for the current financial year was passed during the session. Moreover, the bills for hike of salary and perks of the MLAs, chief minister, ministers, Speaker, deputy speaker and leader of Opposition had received the House’s approval. The legislature also gave its nod to provision for reservation of 50 per cent seats in the panchayati raj institutions for women during the session.he session had begun on February 14 on a stormy note with the Opposition boycotting the governor’s address over the dal scam. The Opposition had stalled the proceeding for more than 20 days over the scam.

Sarva Siksha

Bhubaneswar: A budget allocation of Rs 2,200 crore has been allocated towards implementation of the Sarva Siksha Abhiyaan and the Right to Education in Orissa, a hike of 16 percent from last year. Of this, 65 per cent will be borne by the Centre and 35 per cent by the state government. The budget for 2010-11 was Rs 1,943.66 lakh of which 94.94 per cent have been spent, said an official release. This years, the budget will be used by the school and mass education department to open 374 new upper primary schools and 65 more Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya.

12 arrested

Bhubaneswar: A three-member team of the Medical Council of India (MCI) visited the Sriram Chandra Bhanja (SCB) Medical College here on Friday to assess the infrastructure and staff against renewal of increase in the MBBS seats here. The team visited different departments of the hospital reviewing the necessary facilities such as, staff and infrastructure, of the hospital.

Red surrender

Jajpur: Two Maoists, including a minor, on Friday surrendered before top brass of the district police at Jajpur. The two have been identified as Jaka Hansda alias Boya alias Kishore (20) of Gokhata (Hudisahi) village under Kaliapani police limits in Jajpur district and Krushna Soy alias Anil (13 ) of Baiburu under Ghasipura police station in Keonjhar district. The administration would extend all assistance to the surrendered ultras to reform, Jajpur superintendent of police D.S. Kuttey said.

Congress rally

Bhubaneswar: The Orissa Pradesh Youth Congress (OPYC) on Friday launched a major offensive against the BJD government and chief minister Naveen Patnaik with a massive rally led by Mohd. Shahnawaz, secretary of the Indian Youth Congress and the OPYC in-charge. The rally aimed at raising the problem of unemployment as the major issues before the youth of the state. “While more than 100 MoUs have been signed by the Naveen Patnaik government, the local youth are not being provided employment opportunities in these industries. Rather workers from outside are being brought to work here and thereby destroying the socio-economic standards of the Oriya youth,” Shahnawaz said.

Charred body

Paradip: Police on Friday retrieved the charred body of a 27-year-old woman, allegedly burnt alive by spouse and in-laws, in Kirola village under Kujang police station jurisdiction. “The victim, identified as Ilarani Das, either set herself fire or the in-laws burnt her to death,” said Shantanu Kumar Das, sub-divisional police officer, Paradip.
