Bhubaneswar: The state government has engaged a four-member team from the Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneswar (XIMB) to carry out evaluation of the Students’ Academic Management System (Sams) as a third party auditor. The Sams project for junior and degree colleges is being run under the Odisha Computer Application Centre, the technical directorate of department of information technology. Bhubaneswar: Srinix College of Engineering, Balasore, was closed sine die following unrest in the wake of a student’s death outside the institute on Wednesday. The final-year student, Tanushree Sahu, was run over by a truck after which her classmates went berserk, alleging the accident took place because of poor road conditions. They beat up the truck driver, set the vehicle on fire, attacked the principal and damaged a police jeep and an ambulance on the spot. Students vacated the hostels on the instruction of authorities. Red Cross has paid Rs 10,000 compensation to the victim’s family. Bhubaneswar: Teachers from private schools of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack attended an awareness programme on Supreme Court’s judgment last April that one-fourth seats in all schools would be reserved for economically weaker children. This provision is applicable to all private schools, barring unaided minority institutions. Berhampur: Dandapani Mohanty, convener of Jana Adhikar Manch, who was arrested on the charges of being involved in Maoist activities, was admitted to the district headquarters hospital at Paralakhemundi as his health deteriorated after a hunger strike. Mohanty, lodged at R Udayagiri sub-jail on February 8, had lost 3 kg and was suffering from dehydration, sources said. Cuttack: A 27-year-old youth allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his fiancé’s home at CDA sector-7 on Thursday. Police said the youth, Aravind Mohanty of Ganjam, committed suicide following an altercation. “We have registered an unnatural death case and parents of the deceased have been informed,” said inspector in charge of Markatnagar police station D.P. Patra.
