Bhubaneswar: All the three major political parties have geared up to flex muscles during the monsoon session of the Odisha Assembly beginning Tuesday, as it might be the last session before the general elections due early next year.
While the Congress and the BJP chalked out their strategies to nail the government for its alleged failure and corrupt deeds, the BJD decided to harp on the Mahanadi, Polavaram and fuel price hike issues to corner Narendra Modi's party.
"We are prepared for constructive discussion on any issue to be raised by the Opposition parties. We will also take up the issue of Central neglect," said Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik after presiding over a meeting of BJD legislators on Monday evening.
A few important bills will also be brought during this session, he said. The resolution for the establishment of a legislative council is likely to be moved in this short session, which will only have 11 working days.
The Congress on Monday decided to take up the farmers' issues and the ongoing teacher agitation among other major burning issues.
"The farmers affected by the natural calamities are not getting crop insurance claims for which they are being forced to commit suicide. Both the BJD government in the state and the BJP government at the Centre are responsible for this situation," said Congress chief whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati, He also lambasted the state government for the ongoing teachers' agitation, which is "spoiling the future of lakhs of students".
BJP MLA Pradeep Purohit said: "The Naveen Patnaik government is depriving the people of Odisha from the central scheme of Ayushman Bharat because of political reasons. Besides, it is hijacking several central schemes and projecting them as its own."
He also said that his party would raise the issue of curtailing the rights of panchayati raj institutions in the name of "Ama Gaon, Ama Bikash Yojana".
The government will present the supplementary budget of Rs 12,768 crore on September 5. Earlier, it was scheduled to be placed on Tuesday, but was later postponed to facilitate adjournment of the House in honour of former Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee.
