Bhubaneswar, Nov. 19: The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) will set up a medical college and hospital near Sundargarh town at a cost of Rs 350 crore.

Chairman of the company Arup Roy Choudhury today called on chief minister Naveen Patnaik at the secretariat and had a discussion with him regarding the project. “Mumbai-based architect Hafeez Contractor will prepare the design and make the presentation before the chief minister,” said Roy Choudhury.

The project is likely to be commissioned by 2016-17. The proposed institute near Sundargarh town will have 100 MBBS seats and 400 beds for the hospital.

Energy minister Pranab Prakash Das said the presentation would be made within 15 days. The state, which is facing acute shortage of doctors, will find the NTPC project to set up a medial college of immense help.

Besides, three other public sector companies — Employees State Insurance Corporation in Bhubaneswar, Steel Authority India Limited in Rourkela and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited in Talcher — will set up a medical college each as part of their corporate social responsibilities.

The state government has also decided to open another eight medical colleges, including three in Bhubaneswar and one on its outskirts, while others will be located in Rourkela, Keonjhar, Jaring in Kalahandi and Chandpur in Nayagarh district.

The NTPC today also discussed the issue of setting up 70 model schools in the state and a world-class ITI in Ganjam. It also discussed how the public sector unit had made an ambitious plan to generate 3,000MW solar power in the country.
