Bhubaneswar, Nov. 25: The Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) is set to introduce individual login IDs for the students.

“Students will be provided a login ID, through which they can access all information regarding their status. They will know how many exams they have cleared, how many papers they have failed and which papers are blocked and why, their attendance status and other details. This will save the students from the trouble of frequently running to the office for queries,” said the university’s director of examinations R.R. Das.

The university is also on a 14-tier security system to check the forging of mark sheets. “The incidents of forged mark sheets have seen an increase in the past few years. Recently we received a BPUT certificate offering arts degree to a student whereas BPUT does not offer any course in arts. Every thing including the paper and the logo was done to perfection,” said Das.

“Technological advancement has made forging of certificates very easy. This is the reason we have decided to go for a 14-tier security system,” said Das.

The certificates issued this academic year will have many new features including a special penetrating ring and a hologram that would be visible in ultraviolet rays. The new certificates will also have the BPUT watermark and a border.

Also, if everything goes as planned, students will be saved from the endless wait for their mark sheets. To expedite the process of issuing certificates, the varsity authorities have decided to shut down the colleges for a month so that the teachers can be engaged in the evaluation process. Exams not being held on time and delay in the publication of results have been long-standing complaints by the students.

The four-year BTech course is generally extended to five years and the two-year MTech course is extended to three years. About 800 teachers from all the colleges would be engaged for checking of papers and results will be out in time, said the director.

The university is also trying to check the entry of lesser-known companies in campus placements. “The varsity is making arrangements to first screen the companies who come for recruitment. The colleges will be asked to inform the varsity in advance about the companies who come for campus placements. We will check their history of recruitments and then allow them,” said a senior official.

“This is definitely a very good step taken by the university. There are firms who offer the students salaries between Rs 4,000 and Rs 5,000. Students who are desperate for jobs, take the offers. Since long, we have been demanding the ouster of such firms from conducting campus recruitment,” said Dwarikanath Mohanty, president of the BPUT Students’ Association.
