Bhubaneswar: The BJP on Monday intensified its agitation for CBI probe into the circumstances leading to the death of the alleged Kunduli gang-rape victim with hundreds of activists sneaking into the prohibited zone outside the chief minister's residence to protest.

The BJP activists also scuffled with police during the protest, demanding the resignation of chief minister Naveen Patnaik.

Though the area near Naveen Nivas, the chief minister's residence, is heavily fortified, the activists managed to trick the police by taking an alternative road instead of the road connecting Sishu Bhavan Square to Naveen Nivas. Later, the police took around 150 protestors into preventive custody while they tried to barge into Naveen Nivas.

BJP state vice-president Sameer Mohanty accused the government of being a mute spectator to atrocities against women in the state.

"The government has failed miserably to give justice to the girl. The police also hushed up the matter and the chief minister should resign on moral grounds in this situation. Besides, there should be a CBI probe into the entire incident," said Mohanty.

BJP activists also clashed with the police near Sishu Bhavan Square on January 23. The protestors had pelted the police with stones and the cops, in return, resorted to lathi charge. More than a dozen people from both sides were injured in the clash. The BJP's Mahila Morcha also ransacked the State Commission for Women office last week.

The police have beefed up security in the area. "We are keeping strict vigil and have deployed adequate police personnel to prevent any untoward incident," said deputy commissioner of police Satya-brata Bhoi.
