Balasore, Nov. 4: Balasore police today arrested a 23-year-old man for looting a jewellery showroom on October 27.

They recovered 2.4kg of gold ornaments worth over Rs 80 lakh and Rs 24 lakh in cash from Sukanta Behera, who worked at the showroom.

The police have also recovered the CCTV cameras, which he had removed before the burglary. Behera is a resident of Remuna.

A case was registered after the owner of the showroom lodged a complaint that thieves had opened the shutter locks, removed the CCTV cameras and decamped with cash and jewellery.

“Every stolen item has been recovered. We have seized one of the CCTV cameras that was dumped near a river. The accused was produced in court today,” said Amrita Dash, the superintendent of police.

“Preliminary investigations had revealed that it was the job of an insider and our suspicion zeroed in on the security guard,” said Dash.

Behera had been working as a security guard in the showroom for about five years.

“Behera had left the shutters open instead of locking them when the showroom closed for the day. At night, he entered the showroom and broke a fixed glass door,” said deputy superintendent of police Kailash Chandra Parida.

“He had hidden the gold ornaments at one place and cash at another. We recovered the items after interrogating him,” he said.
