Bhubaneswar, Jan. 1: Cuttack-Bhubaneswar police fined more than 450 drunk revellers last night for various offences under the Motor Vehicles Act and the Orissa Urban Police Act.
More than 25 people were admitted to hospitals after they met with accidents.
Ten people were arrested for indulging in violent clashes after getting drunk at two different places in the state capital.
Police officials said they had instructed revellers not to drive after consuming alcohol and create any trouble on the road or in their localities.
“As these drunk revellers were potential threats to others’ lives and properties, we had instructed them to stay within their limits and not create trouble for others. We had relaxed the party norms keeping an eye on the zero hour celebration at 12 midnight and started our drive after that,” said a senior police officer.
He had fined as many as 103 persons for drunk and rash driving, along with some other violations, near AG Square.
Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Nitinjeet Singh said police teams had been conducting raids and checking at various traffic squares and important traffic junctions across the state capital.
“We fined 103 people with Rs 500 each under the Orissa Urban Police Act and 350 others under the Motor Vehicles Act for drunk driving, carrying three persons on two-wheelers, driving without headgear and various other offences. We mostly targeted party goers who were driving while drunk and creating trouble for others,” said the DCP.
More than 25 people were admitted to Capital Hospital last night, most of them with minor injuries.
Asit Das, a party hopper who witnessed an accident last night at Kalpana Square, said that while he was returning home with a friend, he saw two rowdy youths on a motorcycle creating a scene.
After some time, he saw the youths hit a car from behind after losing control of the bike.
“We informed the police, who rushed them to hospital. The occupants in the car drove away fast. I think they feared they would have to face trouble from the two drunk drivers,” said Das.
The city police had relaxed the party norm till 12.30 for the celebrations. But many people were seen roaming the streets till early morning.
In two cases, the cops arrested 10 youths for indulging in violent clashes after getting drunk.
The Kharavela Nagar police arrested four persons for clashing with one another over minor matters at Shastri Nagar.
The cops at Laxmi Sagar arrested five youths near Bomikhal while the Saheed Nagar police nabbed one engineering student, who was a member of a group of youths who attacked some local residents.
“Most of these youths were students who got involved in illegal activities after getting drunk. Our police teams kept patrolling every nook and corner of the city to keep tabs on such elements,” said a senior officer.
