Bhubaneswar, Nov. 9: Saheed Nagar police today recovered the body of a 22-year-old girl, who was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her hostel room at Utkal University, Vanivihar. Police have seized a suicide note, which cops claimed hinted at a failed love affair.

The girl, identified as Sangeeta Sarojini, a second-year psychology student, committed suicide between 11am and 12noon, when her roommate had gone out. Sources said her friend had gone to photocopy some study material to a nearby shop when the incident occurred.

Swarnamayee Tripathy, the superintendent of Kuntala Kumari Hostel in which the girl was residing, said she rushed to the hostel after getting the information about the death. She does not reside on the university campus.

“Sangeeta’s friend told us that when she returned the room was closed from inside. She soon informed others who pushed the door forcibly and found Sangeeta hanging by her dupatta from the ceiling fan,” said Tripathy.

Sangeeta’s roommate was shocked after the incident and did not say anything to the media.

However, the hostel staff members said both the girls had decided in the morning to study for their third semester examination, which is to be held in December.

After the conversation, her friend went outside to photocopy the study materials Sangeeta had marked. However, before she returned, Sangeeta had committed suicide. Sources said the deceased had failed in one subject in her second semester examination.

The Saheed Nagar police and Sangeeta’s local guardian, Rabi Narayan Moharana, were also informed.

Moharana said Sangeeta was the third daughter of retired headmaster Gouri Shankar Maharana of Ranipada village at Banapur area in Khurda. The girl had taken admission in psychology department at the university in 2010.

He added that Sangeeta had spoken to her family members over phone in the morning. He could not say what conversation took place.

After her father and other family members reached the hostel in the evening, the body was removed and sent to Capital Hospital for an autopsy.

The forensic team was sent and they verified the spot.

The police seized the mobile phone of the girl and the suicide note that hinted at a failed love affair. They suspect the failed love affair may be the reason behind the girl committing suicide.

However, Pratap Rath, the head of the department of psychology, who also visited the hostel, said the note, which was found in the room, did not belong to the deceased.

“We are verifying the suicide note and mobile phone seized from the spot. The reason behind the girl’s suicide will soon be clear,” said a senior police officer.
