Bhubaneswar, Oct. 20: Fashion designer Ritika Halan is set to restyle the wardrobe of the capital. In her early 20s, this promising designer has infused her passion into a brand new clothing line, which she recently launched in the city.

Born and brought up in Bhubaneswar, Ritika always dreamt of redefining fashion in her hometown. “The city has always been ahead in trying out new things when it comes to trends. But there is still a long way to go. Fashion here has been limited to wearing trendy outfits. It’s time for the style conscious to realise that fashion also means accessorising the right way,” said Ritika.

Ritika had joined hands with MTV stylist Nazia Mirza for an exquisite exhibition last year to spruce up the new generation’s style. She had presented a wide range of exclusive outfits — from corduroy blazers and cowl-neck tops to an array of accessories such as belts, wristbands, shoes and jewellery.

The exhibition, which attracted immense attention, gave her a platform to prove her mettle. Inspired by the success and appreciation she received for her collection, Ritika started her own label, Ruri. The budding designer-cum-entrepreneur believes in giving detailed attention to every section of her creations.

“With the help of my sister, I want to bring new elements into fashion in the city. But I keep in mind the sentiments and taste of the people of Orissa while designing clothes or accessories,” says Ritika.

Trained in clothing technology at National Institute of Fashion Technology in Mumbai, the confident designer knows the right technique of mixing and matching colours. This is reflected in her collection. Her creations showcase a blend of both vibrant and pastel hues. Western outfits are the highlights of her recently launched boutique. Ritika has expertly put together colourful tops in cotton, lycra, crochet and chiffon styling them with a fusion of Indian crafts such as sequins and bead work.

However, accessories are her forte. An ensemble of silver-plated bangles embedded with bright stones and various junk ornaments are found in the boutique. Ritika has also designed leather and jute bags, along with suede and wedge heeled shoes in an innovative manner. Inspired by fashion designers Manish Malhotra and Alexander McQueen, Ritika aspires to launch her exclusive boutique worldwide. Her trendy designs are already catching the attention of young fashionistas in town.

“The designs are unique, reasonably priced and wearable. The shoes attract me the most. You can find items which are as inexpensive as Rs 60 and some gorgeous things that are priced at just about Rs 2,000, whereas the same thing would have cost much more elsewhere,” said Prakruti, a visitor at Ritika’s boutique.
