Court stays school fee revision

Cuttack, April 6: Orissa High Court has stayed the notification issued by the principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Charbatia, on the school’s revised fee structure from April 1.

The single judge bench of Justice C.R. Dash delivered the interim stay order on a petition which said the revised fee was arbitrary and illegal as it had almost doubled the monthly fee. A group of parents of the students of the school had filed the petition challenging the notification.

The court also issued notices to the principal, the Union ministry of human resources development and the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan had circulated the revised fee structure among principals of schools run by it.

The notification was scheduled to come into effect from this academic year. Accordingly, the principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Charbatia, had issued the notification on April 1.

According to the notification, the tuition fee has remained unchanged but computer and Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi fees have been doubled. The monthly fee structure for classes I to VIII has been revised to Rs 600 against the earlier fee of Rs 290. Similarly, the monthly fee for classes IX and X has been revised to Rs 800 against the earlier Rs 490.

According to the new fee structure, classes XI and XII (commerce and humanities) would have to pay Rs 900 every month against Rs 590. Those taking information practice as an elective subject will have to pay Rs 50 more every month. For science students of classes XI and XII, the new monthly fee will be Rs 1,000 against Rs 750.
