Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday asked the state machinery to stay prepared for any kind of natural calamity during the coming monsoon.

At present, the state is reeling from severe heat wave conditions with the mercury hovering above 40°C in many parts.

"This year, although the southwest monsoon reached Odisha slightly ahead of its schedule and covered some parts, it suddenly weakened resulting in dry spell with hot and humid weather conditions across the state," said Naveen while presiding over the annual state-level natural calamity committee meeting convened to review the preparedness to face the possible floods and cyclone during rains. The meeting was attended by the leader of Opposition, MLAs of coastal districts apart from other ministers.

Naveen said the agriculture department should keep on observing the situation in co-ordination with the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology and activate the contingency plan, if required.

"In spite of the current rain-deficit situation, we must remain fully prepared to tackle the possible floods and cyclone during the year to meet any eventuality," he said, adding that adequate measures in respect of early warning system, rescue and relief operations, supply of drinking water, health, veterinary and other services must be put in place in time.

Emerging out of the meeting, the chief minister told the media: "The meeting discussed in detail the state government's preparedness to face the challenges of natural calamities. We've managed various calamities successfully with the co-operation of all, and this time, we are again fully prepared to face any situation."

Odisha is prone to multiple and recurring natural disasters. Almost every year, the state experiences floods, cyclone or drought. In 1999, the state was devastated by super cyclone, while it witnessed cyclone Phailin and Hudhud in 2013 and 2014. Last year, the state had witnessed drought, pest attack, unseasonal cyclonic rain and floods.

The chief minister said: "Special attention must be given to the vulnerable population such as children, pregnant women, physically and mentally challenged persons, widows and the elderly people during rescue and relief operations."

"All Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force units and fire services should remain alert for the immediate response. Sufficient quantity of food materials should be stored in vulnerable and inaccessible areas. The district emergency operation centres shall be functional round the clock. Provision of green fodder must be ensured," said Naveen.
