Bhubaneswar: A body of a premature baby girl was found in a dustbin at New AG Colony in front of Kalinga Satium on Friday.
Police are yet to trace the parents of the dead child.
The matter came in to light after few residents noticed smell emanating from the dustbin. Later, they found the body dumped in the dustbin and immediately informed the police.
"We are in touch with various hospitals in our area to find out the parents of the baby. We are also trying to ascertain whether anyone has seen the baby while being dumped," said assistant commissioner of police and in charge of Saheed Nagar police station Kishore Mund.
The state has been witnessing several incidents of female foeticide and abandonment of girl child in recent past. In April, a woman had allegedly thrown her seven-month-old baby girl into fire over family dispute at Salia Sahi. The baby had later died while undergoing treatment.
Bhubaneswar is one among the 10 cities in the state with population of more than one lakh.
The capital city had recorded the minimum sex ratio according to the census conducted in 2011.
While the sex ratio of Bhubaneswar stood at 882, Cuttack registered a sex ratio of 997.
Some of smaller towns, including Baripada, Balasore, Puri and Bhadrak, even registered higher sex ratio as compared to Bhubaneswar.
