
The NSS and fire safety wing of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University displayed various fire fighting tricks and rescue methods during a four-day programme at the varsity recently. Students, faculty members and employees of the varsity were also trained in different fire fighting skills during the programme that concluded on April 26. The programme was held to create awareness about fire hazards and exhibit the methods to extinguish or control fire. The university’s chief fire officer Ram Chandra Sahu explained the various types of fire caused by burning of ordinary materials or involving flammable or combustible liquid or electrical equipment and demonstrated the methods and types of extinguishers needed to douse them. They also provided practical tips to avoid fire accidents caused by carelessness.
Foundation day
Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology’s College of Agriculture celebrated its foundation day and 55th annual commemoration day on May 2 and 3. On the first day, special events such as plantation, agricultural exhibition and farmer-scientist interaction were organised under the chairmanship of varsity vice-chancellor Surendranath Pasupalak.
An inter-collegiate cultural competition was also hosted. On the second day, Niti Aayog member Ramesh Chand, as chief speaker, interacted with the students on the topic of agricultural growth and policy in India.
Dentistry event
A key legal player in the worldwide movement to eliminate mercury amalgams in dentistry, Charlie G. Brown has urged the Dental Council of India to work towards developing a curriculum for students to use amalgam-free alloys and alternatives to silver amalgam. He was speaking at an interactive workshop on ‘Mercury Free Dentistry’ at the Institute of Dental Sciences last week.
Brown, president of the World Alliance for Mercury Free Dentistry, dwelt on the harmful effects of mercury fillings on children and pregnant women and his struggle in the US to ensure mercury-free dentistry. Medical students from across the state attended the event.
Cricket tourney
Rising Student Club, Cuttack, defeated Rameswar Sporting Club, Bhubaneswar, by 10 wickets to win the Hi-Tech Premier League. The match was held on the Hi-Tech Medical College Ground. The winners received a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and the runners-up Rs 25,000. The tournament was played in two categories, one among leading clubs of the state in T-20 format, while the other was a 15-over event among medical colleges and educational institutes.
Interactive session
Five students of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) have been selected by Tata Steel for the All India Tribal Youth Leadership Programme at Asia Plateau, Panchgani, Maharashtra from May 5 to 11. They are Parbati Tubid, Itaswari Kumura, Dabaki Naik, Anupama Bhoi and Saraswati Hansdah.
All students are pursuing their PhD at the institute. The programme will have nearly 100 youths from 52 different tribes from 20 states across India.
The programme aims to create a platform where youths are able to interact and network with each other and gain new perspective on leadership and values.
Child rights
A seminar on ‘Child Rights, Protection Issues And Challenges’ was recently held at Jeypore Law College. On the occasion, homage was paid to the martyrs of Sukma.
District judge Rabi Narayan Mishra spoke in detail about the various dimensions of laws relating to child protection. He said many laws were not implemented because of a lack of political will.
Lawyer Sandeep Sai Panigrahi stressed on discrimination enshrined in the RTE Act. Two sessions were held where many delegates from NGOs, advocates, teachers and students presented their views.
