Bhubaneswar, Aug. 6: Veteran actor and director Ajit Das marked his return to the stage after a 35-year gap with Kie Sie, staged at Rabindra Mandap here, on Wednesday.

Directed by Das, the play, written by Maya Das tells the story of two college sweethearts who meet in a park after 43 years.

The conversation between Rai Bahadur and Padmalaya, played respectively by Das and Kuni Mishra, begins as a casual chat but gradually delves deep into their past as they reminisce about their first loves.

Interestingly, in their old age, they fail to recognise each other. In the end, both walks away wondering who the other was.

"Man collects memories all through his life. At the fag end of life, those memories begin to tickle and he starts recollecting those special moments, especially the ones that have remained unfinished," said the veteran actor.

"People open up to strangers during this time in the hope that they would be patient listeners. The play portrays a similar situation," added Das.

The interaction between the two elderly actors blended maturity and childishness. Their voice modulation and Das' expression brilliantly portrays the enigma of old age and the importance of memories.

Das, who had only been directing plays, said the play compelled him to return to acting.

"I took up the play as the story intrigued me and the character also demanded an old man. I love to direct plays but acting on stage gives an opportunity to connect with the audience, which is an overwhelming feeling," he said.

The production struck a chord with most in the audience. "I liked the chemistry between the two actors and the storyline was also fascinating," said theatre lover Anshuman Pattnaik.

The play was organised by Das's 14-year-old theatre troupe, Abhinaya Jagruti Institute of Theatre.
