34% seats left to be filled at Ravenshaw

More than 34 per cent of the postgraduate seats at Ravenshaw University were left vacant after the first admission on Friday for the second merit list.

Cuttack: More than 34 per cent of the postgraduate seats at Ravenshaw University were left vacant after the first admission on Friday for the second merit list.

The university had conducted entrance examinations for the postgraduate courses from May 22 to May 28. The first merit list was declared for admission on the basis of the exam performance.

Admission committee co-ordinator Dharmabrata Mohapatra said: "The first merit list of 1,208 candidates was declared for the available seats in 27 postgraduate courses on the day of first admission on Friday. A total of 794 candidates were admitted."

The admission process has been decentralised and each department has been empowered to carry out its own admission.

Each department has its own admission committee and the merit lists have been prepared accordingly.

"The second merit list will be declared on Sunday. The merit list will include rankings of wait-listed candidates, in order of merit who reported on the first admission day (Friday)," Mohapatra said.

In the notification of the first merit lists of different departments, the wait-listed candidates were asked to report on Friday between 2pm and 4pm along with the required documents for verification/counselling to be considered for the seats that remain vacant.

A university official said most of the admissions took place in economics (71 admissions against 84 seats), poliitcal science (56 admissions against 64 seats), chemistry (31 admissions against 40 seats), physics (29 admissions against 40 seats), Odia (58 admissions against 64 seats), botany (22 admissions against 24 seats), statistics (15 admissions against 16 seats) and mathematics (37 admissions against 48 seats).

After the first admission, maximum vacant seats were in applied geography (13 of 28 seats), electronics & telecommunications (38 of 60 seats), information technology management (24 of 48 seats), journalism & mass communication (24 of 40 seats) and computer science (24 of 40 seats), an official said.

The university has introduced online payment of admission fee and course fee. Candidates are expected to make payment using debit card, credit card or net banking. No payment through bank draft or cash is allowed.
