Kendrapara: A minor boy was taken into custody for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl in an abandoned house in Pattamundai police station limits of the district last week.

The 14-year-old delinquent had induced the girl by offering chocolates and a packet of potato chips. When the unsuspecting victim went to the deserted house with the accused, he raped her.

The teenaged boy lived in the neighbourhood of the girl's house.

Finding the victim alone at home, he took her to the abandoned house and committed the crime on August 19.

The girl was deeply traumatised following the incident. When her parents asked her what was wrong, she eventually told them what had happened. Consequently, the girl's father lodged a complaint with the police on Sunday, said inspector of Pattamundai police station Pramod Kumar Mallick.

The girl knew the accused and named him to the police.

The accused was immediately picked up from his house and he confessed to the crime. Both the accused and victim were medically examined.

The medical report revealed corroborative evidences of sexual abuse of the girl.

The accused boy was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board. The board later remanded the juvenile delinquent to the special correctional home.

Two similar cases of juvenile delinquencies had been registered in Kendrapara district in the recent past. The arrested juvenile delinquents in those cases are now facing trial in the Juvenile Justice Board.

Kin kills man

A 60-year-old man was murdered, allegedly by a close relative at Kulaba village in Kinjirikela police limits of Sundargarh district. The deceased has been identified as Sahadev Mahanandia. The assailant, Tribasi Mahanandia, who stabbed Sahadev to death, fled the scene after committing the murder. The police have launched a manhunt to nab the accused.

Body found

Police retrieved the charred body of a woman from near the National Thermal Power Corporation plant site in Angul on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Sabita Nayak of Rangabeda village in Angul district. Though it appears to be a case of suicide according to preliminary investigations, the police are also looking into a suspected murder angle, according to investigating officials.
