Dibrugarh, Sept. 3: Two more accused in the robbery and attempted kidnapping of a Dibrugarh University student on August 30 were arrested today.

Police said Bhaity Ali was arrested from Joypur in Naharkatia in Dibrugarh district and Osman Ali from Tingaliban village in Sonari.

Officer in-charge of Borbarua police station Raju Gogoi told The Telegraph that acting on information that Bhaity was taking shelter at his brother-in law Gayasuddin Ahmed's house in Joypur, they informed Joypur police outpost and he was arrested. "We are searching for two more accused. So far, we have arrested four - Jen Ali, Imran Ali, Asif Ali and Bhaity Ali. They have been sent to judicial custody for five days,'' he said.

The police said Osman provided the vehicle, which has two number plates and was used for cattle smuggling. His son Asif was arrested yesterday by Sonari police from Tingaliban in Charaideo district.

On August 30, a six-member gang of cattle smugglers had tried to snatch the bag of a Dibrugarh University student soon after she alighted from a night bus at Kumaranicha near the university. When the girl, who was on her way to a private hostel, resisted, one of them forced her inside the car and looted her jewellery. Later they threw her out at Chowkidinghee, 6km away.

The case was registered under Sections 364A (kidnapping for ransom) and 395 (dacoity) of IPC at Borbarua police station on the basis of the FIR filed by the girl.

Sources said Chalkhowa, 3km from Kumaranicha, is a hideout for cattle smugglers in Dibrugarh. The gangs operate at night and early morning.

Activists had organised a sit-in on August 31 at Thana chariali, seeking exemplary punishment for the culprits.
