Silapathar, March 20: Filing of nomination papers for the Dhemaji byelection today delayed the V.B. Pyarelal committee meeting with the district administration regarding the March 6 Silapathar incident.

The Assam government had constituted the committee, headed by additional chief secretary V.B. Pyarelal, to inquire into the incident where the Silapathar office of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) was attacked by the members and supporters of the Nikhil Bharat Bangali Udbastu Samanway Samitee (Nibbuss).

The committee, which reached Dhemaji this morning, was supposed to sit with district administration officials in the morning. But because of filing of nomination for the byelection, the meeting was postponed till 7pm. In the evening, Pyarelal was briefed by deputy commissioner Roshani A. Korati and superintendent of police Nilesh Sawakare at the conference hall of the deputy commissioner's office.

Tomorrow, Pyarelal will meet the public and leaders of different organisations at the Silapathar panchayat office.

The probe will ascertain whether any individual or organisation was involved in the violence, if so, will fix responsibility. It will also inquire whether the incident was a part of larger conspiracy to disturb peace and harmony in the state and cause disaffection amongst different sections of society.

On the other hand, various organisations, including those representing the Bengali community, are ready to put forward their grievances before the committee.

On March 6, Nibbuss had organised a daylong meeting at Silapathar demanding unconditional removal of the names of Hindu Bengalis from the list of D-voters before attacking the AASU office.
