Tezpur: Unified Command, a three-tier counter-insurgency structure in Assam, reviewed the state's security scenario at 4 Corps headquarters here on Thursday, ahead of the publication of the first phase of draft NRC on December 31.
Assam director-general of police Mukesh Sahay said the meeting primarily focused on providing foolproof security at NRC seva kendras, where the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be put up, before and after its publication.
"Additional DGP (law and order) will be the nodal officer for NRC-related security. We discussed detailed and practical steps for providing fool-proof security for NRC-related activities involving all levels of the police. We have identified the sensitive centres. The army will be on standby," Sahay said.
The meeting was presided over by GOC 4 Corps Lt Gen. A.S. Bedi. Senior home, police, paramilitary and air force officials attended it.
Sahay later said the state had received an additional 50 companies of security personnel for the first phase of the draft NRC publication and 35 companies for the second phase. "Apart from the NRC, we also discussed the ensuing global investors meet in Guwahati in February and Republic Day," he said.
The meeting also discussed ways to block Ulfa (I)'s routes to Myanmar.
In Silchar, Cachar deputy commissioner S. Lakshmanan urged citizens not to fall prey to rumours in connection with the draft NRC.
In Hailakandi, deputy commissioner Krishna Govinda Bhuyan said the names of 2.17 lakh residents will appear in the first draft of the NRC.
