Agartala: Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday assured Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb that he would sanction two additional India Reserve (IR) battalions for the state armed police force.
Tripura currently has got 12 battalions of Tripura State Rifles (TSR), the state's own armed police wing expert in counter-insurgency operations.
Deb and deputy chief minister Jishnu Devvarma are meeting central ministers since Monday in New Delhi. The duo met Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, petroleum and natural gas minister Dharmendra Pradhan, tribal affairs minister Jual Oram, DoNER minister Jitendra Singh and minister of state Hardeep S. Puri on Tuesday.
An official statement said the series of meetings of Deb and Devvarma were "highly fruitful and successful" for "future socio-economic development" of the state.
Deb discussed border fencing, maintenance of border roads, apart from other security issues, with the home minister.
The home minister also assured Deb that he would consider the feasibility of installing CCTV cameras on the border fence with Bangladesh on the Tripura frontiers and set up a central control and monitoring room to prevent any illegal activities on the border.
The two IR battalions sanctioned for Tripura would generate direct employment for about 2,200 youths, the government statement claimed.
Puri issued instructions for urgent release of Rs 292 crore for different schemes. Support was also assured for externally-aided projects for development of seven district headquarters of the state, barring West Tripura, at a cost of Rs 1,320 crore.
A recent review of Tripura's fiscal condition revealed a deficit of Rs 11,355.53 crore.
