Shillong, Feb. 9: The inquiry into the controversy surrounding the Raj Bhavan here, where former governor V. Shanmuganathan was compelled to relinquish office, is unlikely to take place soon with Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma seeking further legal opinion on the issue.

Sangma said home minister H.D.R. Lyngdoh need not resign from the post, though a minor girl was allegedly sexually exploited in the guesthouse (Marvelene's Inn), which is being run by his son, Nathaniel Rymmai.

On January 26, Shanmuganathan quit as governor of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh following allegations by Raj Bhavan staff in Shillong that he was"seriously compromising" the dignity of the office and accused him of turning the Raj Bhavan into a "young ladies club".

President Pranab Mukherjee appointed Assam governor Banwarilal Purohit and Nagaland governor P.B. Acharya in his place to discharge the functions of the governor of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh respectively in addition to their present charge as the governor of Assam and Nagaland.

"I have asked for further legal opinion on this. Everything which is linked with legality has to be guided by the law of the land, and all other spaces according to the mandate of the law," Sangma told reporters here.

Whether inquiry should be constituted by the state or the Centre, Sangma, "We have directed to get legal opinion from different sources. Therefore, we will be guided by such legal opinion."

Various groups, including the Meghalaya BJP unit, have been demanding for a free and fair inquiry into the allegations levelled against the former governor, even as they hailed Shanmuganathan for setting a good example by relinquishing the post on mere allegations.

The BJP also intensified its demand that Meghalaya home minister H.D.R. Lyngdoh should resign from his post.

"The former governor set a good example by resigning from the posts of governor to ensure a free and fair probe. The home minister (Lyngdoh) who is reluctant to relinquish the post, and chief minister Mukul Sangma who is also defending him, should learn from the former governor," state BJP vice-president Bashailang Khongwir had told reporters earlier.

To a question on whether the state home minister would be dropped, Sangma maintained his earlier stand that there was no reason for Lyngdoh to be relieved of the portfolio.

On Independent MLA from Mawhati, Julius Kitbok Dorphang, who is in jail for being accused of sexually exploiting a minor girl, the chief minister said, "The political appointment accorded to Dorphang has been removed."

Dorphang, who is supporting the Congress-led government, was appointed to the post of Meghalaya Khadi and Village Industries Board chairman.

He was arrested from Guwahati in January and a chargesheet has been filed by police against him and other arrested persons.
