Guwahati, July 2: NF Railway SC posted an emphatic 9-0 victory over Young Amateur Club in the inaugural match of the Guwahati Sports Association (GSA)’s fourth Narayan Chandra Mahajan super division league at Nehru Stadium here today.
In a highly one-sided match, forward Thagit Sonowal opened the floodgates for the railway team in the fourth minute when he nudged home an easy opportunity from inside the opponents’ penalty area.
Nineteen minutes later, Sonowal, who was lurking inside the rival danger zone, scored the second goal when he nudged home a cross from the left flank by Kushal Rajkonwar.
Janak Basumatary, another dangerous striker in the NF Railway ranks, headed a beautifully-placed corner kick from Sibendra Goyari just two minutes after the second goal.
Rajkonwar, the linkman during Sonowal’s second strike, himself got into the act of scoring as he capitalised on a defensive lapse by the Amateurs to enhance the lead to 4-0 in the 27th minute.
The railway team led 4-0 at the breather.
The inexperienced Amateurs, who inducted five Bengal players only yesterday, lost their groove completely against the constant attacks by the railway forwards and midfielders.
Having got four goals to none in the first session, the railway team showed more appetite for goals in the second half. Striker Duleswar Rabha struck thrice, while Goyari notched two goals to make it 9-0 at the end of play.
Rabha found the net for his first goal seven minutes after the break through a solo effort.
Goyari scored his first in the 75th minute when he kicked in a rebound from Amateur custodian Samiram Majumdar’s hands off a hard-hit long ranger from Sonowal.
Rabha hit back in the 80th minute finding the net once again through another solo run.
Two minutes later, Goyari beat custodian Majumdar to score his second in the match.
Rabha hammered the last nail in the Amateur coffin in the 86th minute by directing a cross from Tapash Sinha, substituting for Sonowal.
Sonowal was replaced as he missed a penalty after defender Biswajit Roy pulled him down inside the goalbox in the 79th minute.
Ashok Basumatary of NF Railway became the first player to be penalised in this edition of the meet as he was shown the yellow card for rough tackle. The GSA has adopted the Fifa 1993 rules on penalty for caution and expulsion rules for all tournaments hosted by it.
Dynamo FC will meet Maharana AC tomorrow in the second match of the tournament.
Veteran sports organiser Kumudeswar Hazarika inaugurated the super league, while sports commissioner Pradip Hazarika attended the opening ceremony as guest of honour.
