Guwahati, March 23 (PTI): The Election Commission today announced that the process for next month?s Assembly elections in Assam was ?going in the right direction?.

After holding a high-level review meeting with government and police officials here, chief election commissioner B.B. Tandon said various precautionary steps have been taken to ensure that the two-phased poll process is ?going in the right direction?.

?All aspects of poll preparation were discussed, including deployment of central paramilitary forces in both the phases?, Tandon told reporters here.

Tandon said of the 88 poll observers deployed in the state, 49 had already arrived. He urged political parties to approach them in case of any complaints.

The CEC denied reports that any of the 21 documents required for identification of voters in Assam in the absence of proper ID cards would be a hindrance for voting.

?There is a wide choice and any of the 21 documents will be enough not only for an individual but the family to exercise their franchise?, he said, adding that he had discussed poll-related matters with representatives of Congress, BJP and NCP during his visit.
