Guwahati, Feb. 24: Wary of another flare-up in the North Cachar Hills district, Dispur today reviewed the security threat to Dima Halam Daogah chief Dilip Nunisa, who was allegedly fired at by suspected militants of the Hmar People?s Convention (Democratic) yesterday near Haflong.
A high-level meeting was held in Dispur today to take stock of the situation in the hill district after the shootout to ensure that the incident did not take spark any unrest in the hills. Nunisa moves around with his own bodyguards but the state may provide him security if the situation so requires.
Nunisa yesterday claimed that a group of HPC (D) militants had attacked his car at Mahadevtila, but police said the target of the attack was a schoolteacher who died on the spot after two bullets pierced his right neck and cheek.
Official sources said Nunisa?s security has been reviewed and the district administration has been asked to submit a detailed report about the incident. Dispur?s concern stems from the fact that the DHD has entered into a ceasefire with the government and the last round of talks was held early this month. ?We cannot take a risk. We have done a preliminary review of the threat perception to the DHD chief,? a senior official said.
A massive combing operation has been launched by the army, Assam Rifles, CRPF and the police.
Jadikhe Naisho Hoshom, the apex body of the Dimasa community, and the Kuki Students Organisation, Guwahati, have condemned the incident and demanded immediate action against the killers.
?The Jadikhe Naisho Hoshom vehemently condemns the barbaric attack on the DHD chairman,? said a press release of the organisation. It also asked the district administration to help the teacher?s family financially.
The Kuki student body also condemned the killing of schoolteacher Dannis Kung?a Changsan, describing the incident as ?dastardly and inhuman?.
