Imphal, Aug. 18: Still fuming over the Beijing fiasco, Manipur's weightlifter Laishram Monika Devi today announced that she would not take part in any competition until the people who had “conspired” against her were punished.

“I will risk termination of service, but I will abide by the decision taken by the people of Manipur. I will not take part in any competition until justice is done to me,” Monika told a news conference here today.

At present, the 69kg weightlifter who is employed as a havildar in the CRPF has four competitions, including the Commonwealth Games, scheduled for December.

Monika’s announcement came as the deadline set by the Coordinating Committee Against Conspiracy to Exclude Monika from Beijing Olympics for New Delhi to tender an apology to the people of Manipur and bring the culprits to book ended today.

The committee comprises Manipur Olympic Association, sports organisations and citizen groups. Various associations have announced their decision of not sending teams to national or zonal meets.

The committee is also not satisfied with the ongoing probe into the Monika doping controversy by former chief Election Commissioner T.S. Krishnamurthy. Monika said the probe would not bring her justice.

“Even if my organisation sacks me for not taking part in competitions, I will not change my mind. But if the people of Manipur ask me to compete I will do so happily,” she said.

Monika was even denied leave to come to Imphal but she did so yesterday and has not set a date for her return to New Delhi.

She, however, said she would immediately leave Imphal if required in Delhi for the probe.

Not one to give up easily, Monika, who stayed away from heavy iron bars for 10 days after she was denied an Olympic berth, began her training again today at her Nachou home in Bishnupur district. The last time she had a practice session was on August 9 in Delhi, while awaiting clearance for her trip to Beijing.

She stopped lifting weights after IOA officials sent a message to Delhi from Beijing that she would not be able to make to the Chinese capital. “I could not eat or sleep if I missed a practice session. But I stopped training since August 9 and resumed only today,” she said.

Monika not only “inaugurated” her home gym, Monika Gym, this morning but also spent an hour there lifting weights with a vengeance. The gym was ready last year, but Monika had decided to inaugurate it only after she returned from Beijing.

“The discrimination by sports officials of India has strengthened my commitment to improve my performance. I will work harder to improve my participation and am still hoping to make it in the next Olympics,” Monika said.
