Aizawl Nov. 23: Mizoram’s Jenny R. Lalremliani created history today by winning the first world title at the World Women’s Boxing Championship. Jenny defeated Sweden’s Kalara Svensson in the second round to claim the crown in the 63-kg category. With the win, Jenny has become the first Indian woman to win a world title in boxing.

When Kalara’s coach threw in the towel in the second round, Jenny had already totalled 23 points compared to Kalara’s eight points.

This is Jenny’s first gold in an international event after the Asian Women’s Boxing Championship crown in 2003.

In the first round itself,Jenny was far ahead of her opponent. Despite suffering a hit on the back of the neck, after which she fell flat on the floor, Jenny remained unfazed.

It was a proud moment for Indians watching the live telecast when Kalara’s coach conceded defeat and signalled for the bout to end.

Earlier today, Jenny’s mother Thangliani, when contacted in New Delhi, had said she was worried as Jenny was suffering from stomach disorder. “I was worried that she may not be able to fight because she has been having stomach problems. Since we cannot give her any kind of medication because of the drugs control policy, I was not sure my daughter could get into the ring,” she said over phone.

Apart from the 2003 Asian gold, Jenny has won several medals at national meets. She won a gold in the 2002 National Games and a bronze in the WITCH Cup meet in Hungary.

Varsity hockey: Manipur has a good chance to upstage defending champions Guru Nanak Dev University when they meet for the super league final of the all-India inter-university women’s hockey meet, 2006-07 at Khuman Lampak stadium in Imphal on Friday.
