Shillong, Feb. 2: The Meghalaya Democratic Party (MDP) today released the party’s manifesto, which highlights the need to uproot corruption at all levels.
The party president and social welfare minister Martle Mukhim released the 25-point agenda, which also stresses the need to settle the border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya.
The MDP has also decided to oppose the uranium-mining project in West Khasi Hills.
The 18 MDP candidates contesting the Assembly elections were present at the release of the manifesto, after which Mukhim said there was a need for the unification of all the regional parties under the existing forum of Regional Party’s Alliance (RPA).
Some UDP leaders said Mukhim was against the unification of UDP and MDP. Reacting to this, the MDP president said UDP was the stumbling block.
Power deal protest: The Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Peoples (FKJGP) today launched an anti-government campaign at Nongpoh, chief minister D.D. Lapang’s constituency, in protest against the handing over of power projects to private companies.
The federation’s president, E. Lyttan, criticised the government for entering into the deal with private companies without looking into their credentials.
Joe Marwein, the general secretary of the federation, also criticised the MDA. The federation will launch similar campaigns in Shillong and Nongstoin. It demanded that the state government scrap the power deal instead of keeping it in abeyance.
