July 26: Police found the body of Deepak Kalita, 45, hanging from a tree on the edge of National Highway 37 bypass in the Basistha area of the city.

Kalita is survived by his wife and son.

According to police sources, Kalita committed suicide on Wednesday night. Local residents spotted the body in the morning and informed Basistha police.

Kalita worked as a helper at a roadside restaurant in Basistha. Though he hailed from Nalbari district, he had been residing with his family for the past few years in that area.

The police said financial difficulties could have prompted Kalita to take his own life.

“Though Kalita is suspected to have committed suicide late on Wednesday night, local residents found his body hanging from the tree on the highway in the early hours. During initial investigations, we found that the victim had been facing severe financial problems, as a result of which he was finding it difficult to run the household. He was also deep in debt,” said Banamali Handique, officer-in-charge of Basistha police station.

“However, the investigations are still on and we will be able to say more on Kalita’s death after the probe is completed. The body was sent for post-mortem at GMCH. The cause of death will be clear once we receive the post-mortem report,” he said.

Kalita’s body was handed over to his family today.
