Kohima, Jan. 20: In a major setback to the JD(U), five districts of Nagaland have dissolved their units and joined the Nagaland People’s Front (NPF), the main constituent of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN). The five districts are Mokokchung, Wokha, Peren, Kiphire and Mon.
This sudden decision was taken in protest against two legislators joining the Opposition Congress recently.
Kiphire district unit president T. Tankiu Sangtam said JD(U) legislators Huska Sumi, Deo Nukhu and state unit president Limatemjen Ao were victimising them for their own individual benefit.
The presidents of five districts accused Ao, Nukhu and Sumi of having a confidential negotiation with the Congress government. Therefore, they have decided to dissolve the party units and join the NPF.
In accordance with this mass resignation of the state and district functionaries of the party, the president of JD(U), Tuensang unit, Kius Chuba Yimchunger also resigned from the active and primary membership of the party. Both Nukhu and Sumi have joined the Congress and are now seeking party tickets for the March 5 elections. Sumi today said he resigned from the Assembly on January 14.
Three Independent legislators, Khutovi Sumi, Jongshilemba Ao and P. Chuba Chang also resigned from the Assembly on Friday night. With this, the strength of Nagaland Assembly has been reduced to 41 in a House of 60. Despite this political development, DAN has asked Governor K. Sankaranarayanan to reinstate the government in the larger interest of the Naga people. The combined DAN has 19 NPF, 4 BJP and one Independent, while the Opposition has 16 Congress and one JD(U).
