Guwahati: The All Assam Bengali Parishad, an organisation representing the linguistic minority people of Assam, on Sunday appealed to all Bengalis living in the Brahmaputra Valley to register their mother tongue as Assamese in the ongoing census. Chitta Pal, the president of of the parishad, said at a news briefing that the 48 lakh Bengalis of the valley have always identified themselves as Assamese but some with “vested interests” are working overtime to coerce the people into changing their identity to Bengali. “Langauge has never been a problem for us. Our only concern is socio-economic uplift of the people,” he added.
