Aug. 29: Most people are likely to arrange for a musical tribute when he turns 85 on September 8, but there is one cultural organisation which will say it with a diamond — albeit made from flour, sugar and cream.

Bhupen Hazarika might just be away in Mumbai for treatment on his birthday, but Heritage Northeast is planning a little party of its own, with a giant diamond-shaped cake designed especially for the occasion.

“Diamond is a conductor of energy. They have a strong field of radiant light and energy, which can be used as a protection against negative vibrations. Similarly, Bhupenda is also source of positive energy. So, I thought it would be an apt design for his birthday cake,” said Rathim Borthakur, designer of the cake and associate member of Heritage Northeast.

The association has decided to call upon a Hazarika fan, Lakhi Goswami, who is a doctor from Tezpur, to do the honours of cutting the cake.

The chief convener of Heritage Northeast, Pramod Saikia, said the cake will weigh 47.6kg and is estimated to cost Rs 25,000.

“There will be three layers on the base of the cake,” he said.

Borthakur has designed it in such a manner that the base of the cake alone — with not a cut on the diamond above — will be enough for the people who will attend the event.

The three layers will be in pale indigo, yellow, pale green.

Besides this, the cake will have four japis along with moar singha pepa on its four sides.

Borthakur said the association would try to contact the singer, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mumbai, to convey their heartiest wishes online.

A musical evening has also been lined up for the occasion.

To be held at Pragjyotish ITA Centre, Machkhowa from 6pm, the programme will feature singers like Khagen Mahanta, Archana Mahanta and J.P. Das.

“This is the second time we are celebrating the gem of Assam’s birthday after he got bed-ridden. And all we can pray for on this day is his good health,” Saikia said.
