Tura, March 1: A conglomeration of civil organisations today sought the intervention of North Eastern Hill University vice-chancellor to appoint a full-time pro vice-chancellor for Nehu's Tura campus as the post has been lying vacant for several months.
In a memorandum to vice-chancellor S.K. Srivastav, the organisations sought the appointment of a well-qualified local professor to the post.
The memorandum said the university campus could neither function properly without a regular and full-fledged pro-vice-chancellor nor was it good for the overall health and well-being of an educational institution of the highest level of repute.
The organisations also suggested the setting up of new departments at Nehu's Tura campus, such as public administration, economics and statistics, environment studies, forestry, chemistry and botany. At present, it has nine departments, including management, horticulture and rural development, and agriculture production.
They sought regularisation of contractual staff and out-sourced personnel engaged in non-teaching posts. "Some of the staff have been serving for more than 20 years at a fixed lump sum salary," the memorandum said. They said very few permanent appointments had been made in the non-teaching staff and most of the permanent ones were set to retire soon.
The organisations also sought filling up of posts for assistant registrars, deputy and assistant librarians, junior engineers and section officers, which have been lying vacant at the Tura campus.
They also demanded creation of more teaching posts in the existing nine academic departments, appointment of junior doctors, paramedics, construction of quarters for pro-vice-chancellor and deputy registrar as well as games and sports facilities for students and staff.
The conglomeration comprises the Seniors Citizens' Forum, Vision Plus, A'chik Literature Society, Garo Students' Union, Council of Nokmas, Mothers' Union and the Garo Graduates' Union.
