Kokrajhar, Sept. 13: Various organisations and civil society groups today demanded a judicial inquiry into the gangrape of a deaf and mute woman as the chief judicial magistrate, Kokrajhar, recorded statement of the victim and witnesses.
The physically challenged woman was gangraped on Saturday at Saralpara no. 1 Sonapur in the district by a group of armed men, suspected to be security personnel.
The statements of the victim, her husband and elder sister were recorded by the chief judicial magistrate, Kokrajhar, Holiram Basumatary. As the victim and her sister are both deaf and mute, an interpreter recorded their statements.
The woman was asleep when a group of four-five persons in uniform carrying guns stormed the hut and raped her. She was then taken outside her hut and raped again. Her husband (also physically challenged) was also assaulted.
As his wife was being dragged out, the man ran to the nearby houses and shouted for help. Hearing his cries, the neighbours came out and found the woman lying on the ground nearby.
Women organisations, including the All Bodo Women Welfare Federation, All India Democratic Women’s Association, Women in Governance-Assam, Kokrajhar-Chirang District Sanmilita Mahila Samiti, women activists and NGOs today submitted a memorandum to Kokrajhar deputy commissioner Donald Gilfellon, demanding a high-level judicial probe.
Condemning the incident, the memorandum stated that the act was unpardonable. “The act of the armed men has caused physical and mental trauma to the victim, her husband and sister,” it said.
The organisations will hold a protest rally on Thursday to speed up the investigation and demand the arrest of the culprits.
