Contempt case

A division bench of Gauhati High Court on Tuesday directed chief secretary S. Kablian and DGP D.N. Dutt to appear in the next hearing of a contempt case.

The case was filed by retired police officer A.K. Dasgupta after the government failed to clear his retirement benefits despite a court directive.

Migrants

Latasil police on Tuesday arrested two Bangladeshi migrants, Mariam Khatoon and Zubia Begum, from Arikati Basti and handed them over to the border organisation of Assam police for deportation.

Python

A python was caught with the help of police from a private residence in Ganeshpara under Fatasil Ambari police station on Tuesday. It was later handed over to zoo officials.

Seminar

Guwahati development minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has accepted a proposal by Saraight Journalists’ Forum to organise a seminar in New Delhi to highlight the sacrifices made by Assamese soldiers in the Alaboi battle against the Mughals.

School fest

Army School, Narangi, will organise a five-day annual school festival, Utsav-2006, from Monday. The programmes will include inter-school contests.

Meeting

Guwahati Mati (land) Pattakaran Samiti held a general meeting recently to discuss the problems and demands of landless people in the state capital. There are 99,124 landless people in Dispur Assembly constituency, followed by 80,000 in West Guwahati, 77,000 in East Guwahati and 70,000 in Jalukbari.

Civic woes

Senior citizens from the Rupnagar, Srimantapur and Birubari areas recently met GMC joint commissioner M.P. Sarma and apprised him of the civic problems in their localities. Sarma assured the senior citizens that their problems would be addressed.

V-C dictum

Gauhati University vice-chancellor Amar Jyoti Choudhury has sought reports from the heads of all departments on ways to improve the functioning of the university.

Campus polls

North Guwahati College Students’ Union recently elected its office-bearers. Rupankar Talukdar was elected the general secretary.
