Nagaon, June 4: Anirban Chetia and Bibari Basumatary’s efforts bore fruit today as they were crowned the men and women singles’ champion in the Haripad Kumar 2nd all-Assam ranking badminton tournament at Nurul Amin Indoor Stadium here today.
Anirban Chetia defeated Rajeeb Goswami in a hard fought final match, where they both fought with gusto to claim the crown. Chetia won the first set, but suffered a loss in the second as Goswami came back hard. However, Chetia held his nerve through the third set to finally win the match 25-23, 13-21, 23-21.
Bibari Basumatary, defeated Manali Sinha in the other final after suffering an early setback in the first set. Basumatary after the early loss came back hard to push Sinha on the backfoot. She won the final 17-21, 21-13, 21-16.
Chetia had entered the final by defeating Nikhilesh Sarma in straight sets of 21-18, 21-9 while Goswami defeated J.J. Hatibarua of Dibrugarh 19-21, 21-10, 21-16 in the two semi-finals. Sinha entered the final defeating Anjali Kalita of Guwahati 14-21, 24-22,21-16 and Basumatary defeated Pizza Bharali of Dibrugarh in straight sets of 21-9, 21-11 in the two semi-final matches on Tuesday night.
In the under-16 boys’ doubles, Ehsan Kabir Ali and Subhrajit Roy defeated Mittaul Haque and Jujit Saikia pair 21-16, 13-21, 21-7 in the final match this evening.
In the under-19 boys’ doubles, the Nikhilesh Sarma and Abhisekh Phukan pair overcame the challenge of Ujjal Jyoti Dutta and Anshuman Bora duo with ease, defeating them in straight sets of 21-9, 21-11 for the championship title.
In a final showdown last evening in the under-13 boys’ doubles, Md Ehsas and Krishna Bharadwaj defeated Manjit Gogoi and Neon Nath 21-8, 21-18 to win the title.
Siblings Arshita Chaliha and Asmita Chaliha met in the under-13 girls’ singles final match last evening. Arshita defeated Asmita 21-17, 21-16 to win the crown.
More than 150 participants from eight districts of Assam took part in the tournament that concluded this evening.
