Law College foundation day
The Dispur Law College celebrated its foundation day with a daylong programme recently. Speaker Prithbi Majhi was the chief guest. There was a tree plantation ceremony by P.P. Naolekar, Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and Devananda Konwar, law minister. Education minister Pankaj Bora addressed the students and stressed on the importance of creating legal awareness among the masses. The newly-constructed approach road to the college, the E. Dharmananda Das Avenue was also inaugurated by PWD minister Sarat Barkakati.
Ex-students’ reunion
The reunion of ex-students of T.C. Government Girls’ Higher Secondary and Middle Primary School, Guwahati, will be held on April 12, 2003 at the school premises.
A 60-member committee — with A.K. Absar Hazarika, deputy commissioner, urban, Guwahati, as president, Madhurima Baruah Sen and C.P. Ramsiary, additional deputy commissioner as working presidents and Upendra Nath Choudhury, principal of the school as the general secretary — has been formed to celebrate the occasion.
The committee proposes to bring out a souvenir that will contain the photographs and addresses of all ex-students. Keeping this in view, the committee has requested all ex-students to contact the Reunion Celebration Committee for pro forma for registration. These pro forma, complete with all information, should be submitted by the first week of April. The celebration committee has extended a cordial invitation to all ex-students to the reunion to “avail a great opportunity of exchanging views with their friends”.
Building blocks of education
The newly-constructed building of Juwoi Anushushita Prathamik Vidyalaya, situated in a village 30 km from Guwahati, was recently inaugurated at a function attended by Capt. Robin Bordoloi, Assam’s minister of state for sports, representatives of the state education ministry and other dignitaries and social workers. The building has come up due to the efforts of “Contemporary Cottonians’ Aid for Relief with Ease” (Cocare), an NGO. Before this new structure, nearly 170 children had to learn their alphabets in an abandoned house of a local weaving centre with the help of two unemployed youths of the village.
Drive on AIDS awareness
The Dibrugarh unit of the directorate of field publicity, in collaboration with Surajmukhi Sangha, Udayjyoti Sangha and Duliagaon Mahila Samiti, recently organised an AIDS awareness drive at the Duliajan Lower Primary School, Borborua development block.
The programme included quiz and speech competition, seminar, group discussions, photo exhibitions and a film show. The seminar was presided over by Surendranath Sonowal, secretary, village defence force.
Durgeswar Phukan, chief medical and health officer, Dibrugarh, in his speech as resource person, stressed on the need to make the masses conscious of the spread of HIV/AIDS and the proper precautions to prevent it. Earlier, Nabajyoti Saikia, field publicity officer, explained the aims and objectives of the campaign.
Engineers’ meet
The Jorhat Engineering College will organise an international engineers’ meet on December 24, 25 and 26 this year in its premises.
The college plans to evolve a number of innovative schemes “specifically designed to encourage and support a well-conceived strategy and blueprint for introduction of all-round development of Jorhat Engineering College”.
The schemes shall be devised by a broad group of professionals, preferably ex-students, under the aegis of “Jecimage 2003” in collaboration with the college. Ex-students have been requested to publicise these plans on Jecimage 2003 among all concerned.

Maths talent search
The department of mathematics, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, will organise Mathematical Training and Talent Search (MTTS), the mathematical summer training camp, from June 9 to 28, 2003, for the fifth consecutive year. It will be done under the aegis of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) and the department of atomic energy, Government of India.
Several mathematical experts from leading institutions of the country will join the programme.
The details of the programme, along with the application forms, have been sent to various institutions of the region.
