Brother Oreson Peter Gomes

Shillong, Sept. 23: One of the oldest living members of the Congregation of the Christian Brothers, Brother Oreson Peter Gomes, a very familiar face in the Meghalaya capital, breathed his last in Goa today.

Brother Gomes, as he was known among students of St Edmund's School here where he taught mathematics and science for 32 years, was 94. He died following a brief illness this morning.

Born in Mumbai in 1923, Brother Gomes joined the Christian Brothers in 1948. Before that, he had worked in the railways for three years.

The missionary, who was active until the early 2000s, would take long walks across the city here, interacting with people, especially the youth.

He was sent to an old age home of the Christian Brothers in Goa three years ago.

St Edmund's School principal Brother Solomon Morris said the funeral will take place tomorrow at 2.30pm. A prayer service will also be held at the school chapel here on Monday at 2.30pm, he added.
