Held for taking bribe

Bhubaneswar: Vigilance sleuths arrested an assistant block education officer in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district for allegedly taking Rs 4,000 to approve the pending bill of a self-help group. Jamda assistant block education officer Jaymuni Behera had demanded the money to approve the bills, the group had incurred for supplying midday meal, a vigilance source said. PTI

Oil depot shut

Ranchi: Mayor Asha Lakra on Sunday directed officials in Chutia to close an oil depot near Power House because oil from it was leaking into a nearby pond. Lakra inspected a few ponds in the city to take stock of their cleanliness.

Man dies in mishap

Doomdooma: An unidentified man, aged about 50-years-old, died in a road accident at Ramnagar on National Highway 38 around 11pm on Saturday.

Chhath Puja

Doomdooma: The Tinsukia district committee of the Assam Bhojpuri Sahitya Sabha and the Assam Bhojpuri Yuva Chhatra Parishad will jointly hold contests among Tinsukia, Margherita and Saikhowa Chhath Pujas and will award them for their service to devotees.

Accused beaten up

Doomdooma: Residents of Ambikapur Ahomgaon village in Sadia subdivision assaulted Jiten Gogoi, 45, accused of murdering Tutub Gogoi, and handed him over to the police on Saturday. Jiten had killed Tutub over a land row.

Purse snatcher held

Guwahati: A 15-year-old boy was apprehended from the railway station here on Saturday for allegedly snatching a woman's purse. The accused hails from Jalpaiguri in Bengal. The purse contained a gold chain, a cellphone, two ATM cards and Rs 2,130 cash.

• Guwahati: The all Moran Students' Union organised a meeting on how to improve roads at the 74th Burhidihing-Bordumsa session of Asam Sahitya Sabha held at Burhidihing Adarsha Bidyalaya in Tinsukia on sunday. The session will be held in February.

World record aim

• JORABAT: Sirumani Doloi of Jorabat on October 23 will attempt to get his name registered in the Guinness Book of World Records by riding his Scooty on National Highway 37 from Sonapur in Kamrup (metro) district to Nellie in Morigaon district, a 50km distance, by using his hands and nose to draw a painting.
