Tension in Chirang

Kokrajhar, July 6: Tension prevailed at Santipur in Chirang district after a woman died while giving birth at Santipur state dispensary on Wednesday.

The family members of the woman, Purnima Sutradhar, alleged that nurse Sabita Moran, instead of referring the patient, who had complications, to the nearest hospital, insisted on delivering the baby herself as the doctor, P. Ali Ahmed, was on leave.

Arrested

Guwahati: A joint team, comprising personnel from Assam police and 168 Field Regiment of the army, arrested a suspected NDFB (Songbijit) militant, Bidyaram Brahma, from Rowta in Udalguri district on Wednesday.

Appointed

Guwahati: Dispur on Wednesday appointed Preetom Saikia, commissioner and secretary of the cultural affairs department, as the chairperson of the Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation. Saikia replaced Bobeeta Sarma who resigned recently.

Guwahati: Jayanta Goswami, a junior engineer of the panchayat and rural development department who was arrested from Hojai on Tuesday by anti-corruption sleuths for allegedly accepting a bribe ofRs 10,000, was produced before the court of special judge, Assam, here on Wednesday and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

Guwahati: Assam government on Wednesday extended the term of the committee, headed by Justice (retired) P.G. Agarwal, probing the alleged circulation of bogus family income cards till July 31.
