Assault arrest

Jorhat, Oct. 18: Police arrested Ankur Shankar Pathak of Baligaon on the outskirts here today for assaulting veterinary doctor Minakshi Kalita and obstructing her in discharging her duty. Police sources said Ankur said he had a heated argument with the doctor after Kalita demanded bribe to sign a project report of his proposal to rear animals, for which he had applied for a bank loan. Kalita has denied the charge.

Border visit

Dhubri: Assam additional chief secretary V. Bhaskar and additional director-general of police R. Chandranathan will visit the international border in Dhubri district on Wednesday.

Protest

Tezpur: About 800 contractors of the water resources department will stage a protest here on Wednesay against the present e-tendering system. The Sonitpur District Water Resources Department Contractors Association demanded relaxation of the rules so that all contractors could participate in the process.

Mishap

Jorhat: Tara Sharma, 28, a homemaker, was run over by the Tinsukia-Dangri passenger train at Sukanpukhuri in Tinsukia district on Tuesday. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

UGC nod

Guwahati: The UGC has recognised open and distance learning programmes of Krishna Kanta Handiqui Open State University. The recognition is for 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Postponed

Dhubri: The All-Dhubri Puja Co-ordination Committee has postponed the function to award the best community Puja organisers from October 22 to November 13.

Guwahati: Assam chief information commissioner H.S. Das in an order has said people can seek information through an RTI application about private educational institutions through the directors concerned of the education department.

Workshop

Guwahati: Cancer Research Foundation, in association with B. Borooah Cancer Institute, will conduct a workshop on cancer prevention and control at Assam Don Bosco University on Wednesday.

Road funds

Guwahati: The Assam State Road Board meeting held under the chairmanship of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has approved Rs 2 crore each for the maintenance of roads in 126 Assembly constituencies.
