Guwahati, Aug. 22: Come September, the very best of Indian bridalwear with motifs drawn from the traditional attires of communities that inhabit the Northeast will be showcased at a high-profile fashion event in Bangalore — the Mega Wedding Show.
Assam-based designer Prashantt Ghosh, the only one selected from the Northeast for the September 7-9 event, will showcase his creations alongside bridal haute couture by the likes of Ritu Kumar, J.J. Vallaya, Ragha-vendra Rathore and Anamika Khanna.
The audience will be one to match the occasion. The organisers expect to have Rahul Bajaj, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Tina Ambani, Gautam Singhania and a host of filmstars on the front rows.
Ghosh, whose show is slated for the last day of the event, is confident that his creations will stand out among the rest. “I have created exquisite wedding attire with designs and motifs of the Northeast, especially Assam. I have used indigenous fabrics like pat, muga, eri and khadi, besides some hand-woven cotton,” the designer said.
A bevy of top models, including Noyonika Chatterjee, Ujjwala Raut and Sheetal Malhar, will display Ghosh’s creations on the ramp.
“Fashion mania has gripped the Northeast. Several models from the region, like Tora Khastgir, Dipannita Sharma, Tarun Arora, Monikangana Dutta and Aryan Barua have made it to the top league in the fashion capital of the country. It is now time for fashion designers to make a mark,” he said.
Apart from the bridal mekhela-chador ensemble, Ghosh has designed salwars, sarees and lehenga for women and kurta-pyjama for men.
Supported by Artfed, a government agency for the promotion of traditional art, craft and dresses, Ghosh’s creations also borrow from the traditional designs of the Mising, Karbi and Dimasa tribes. “Some items from my new line also have designs and motifs from Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh,” the designer said.
Ghosh and two of his assistants, Kavita and Kee Kee, have been working frenetically to complete the wedding collection.
Ghosh has done shows in Nepal and Bangladesh, besides regular ramp appearances in New Delhi, Mumbai and Calcutta. He is also a choreographer of repute.
