Dhubri, March 5: India and Bangladesh will erect 40-feet high border pillars on the rivers along the international boundary for proper demarcation and to avoid any confusion between the two sides.

The director of land records of Assam, Sayeed Iftikar Hussain, who along with officials from Bangladesh are engaged in a border survey in Dhubri district, today said Bangladesh had accepted the proposal. The officials arrived here today.

The Bangladesh delegation for surveying the border pillars includes director general of land records and survey, Mahfazur Rahman, director of survey Rofiqul Islam, deputy director of survey A.B.M. Fazlul Rahman and deputy secretary ministry of land, S.M. Abdul Kalam Azad.

Sayeed Iftikar Hussain is representing India.

Talking exclusively to The Telegraph, Bangladesh director general of land records and Survey, Mahfazur Rahman, in Dhubri circuit house today said the frequent survey of border pillars has become necessary to avoid misunderstanding which often leads to firing between the two frontier forces — the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and BSF.

“Border pillars on the land do not cause much confusion or misunderstanding but demarcation of the riverine border has become a tough job as the rivers in these parts frequently change course,” Rahman said.
