Dhubri, Sept. 6: A mega blood donation camp has been organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Terapanth Yuvak Parishad (ABTYP) for the second consecutive year today to script a record in Guinness World Records by collecting 100,000 units of blood.

The Dhubri unit of the parishad had set the target of collecting 200 units, which they fulfilled in the mega blood donation camp held at Dhubri Terapanth Bhawan till 5pm today.

Parishad sources said the country needs 4 crore units every year to treat different categories of critically ill patients. But only 40 lakh units are found to be available and the demand is constantly growing.

With a view to meet this huge demand for blood, the parishad, which has over 350 branches and more than 40,000 members across the country, took a pledge to meet the target of collecting 100,000 units of blood this time. This is the world’s largest blood donation camp and it is likely to find a place in Guinness World Records, president of Dhubri unit ABTYP Anand Bararia said. He said last year, ABTYP in its first attempt had collected 96,600 units in a single day, which was a record in the country.

This time, the camp was held under the surveillance of closed-circuit cameras and with three chartered accountants constantly keeping a watch for the authenticity of the blood unit collected, secretary of Dhubri unit ABTYP Bijoy Nahata said.

Dhubri deputy commissioner Kumud Chandra Kalita and superintendent of police Mridulananda Sarma visited the camp along with host of senior officials and lauded the efforts of the parishad.
