Guwahati, Oct. 3: The Shillong-based Assam Regimental Centre (ARC) became the first team to enter the semi-finals of the 51st Bordoloi Trophy, outplaying Guwahati Town Club (GTC) 6-0 at Nehru Stadium here today.

The win has taken ARC, which went out in the quarters last year, tantalisingly close to their second major win of the season. The team earlier won the Dugar Shield in Tezpur, beating state powerhouse Oil India Limited. Shillong XI capped an eventful day for the Shillong outfits, beating Assam Police by a solitary goal in the last pre-quarterfinal match in Sualkuchi.

They will meet Manipur XI under floodlights in the last quarterfinal match on Saturday. Organisers Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) today said Assam State Electricity Board has granted special concessions for the matches to be held under floodlights. The GSA will now have to shell out around Rs 30,000 for the one quarterfinal, two semi-final and the final, which would have otherwise cost something above Rs 4 lakh.

Playing to empty stands, ARC were leading 4-0 at the break. They opened their account in the 21st minute through S. Chongloi, who scored once again in the 35th minute. L. Puia Hmar and L.D. Liana were the others to find the net in the 28th and 45 minutes respectively.

L.D. Zuala and Gordan boosted ARC’s tally in the 55th and 89th minutes respectively. That it was not GTC’s day was clear when Sujit Majumdar missed a spot kick. Tomorrow, Assam Rifles will take on ASEB in Mirza while Assam Police Blue will clash with Nagaland Police in Sualkuchi.
