Guwahati, Dec. 24: Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti adviser Akhil Gogoi was detained today - the second time in two days after being released from Golaghat jail on Tuesday - for staging a hunger strike in front of the office of the inspector-general (IG), prisons, at Khanapara here seeking reforms in the state's jails.
Akhil, who spent 78 days in Golaghat jail, said he was moved by the deplorable condition in which the jail inmates live.
"As many as 750 prisoners are still behind bars despite completing their terms. Moreover, they are given sub-standard food and are forced to live in a bad condition. To raise this issue, I was on a hunger strike," Akhil told the media while being taken to Dispur police station.
Yesterday, Akhil was detained by the police for protesting near the Assam Public Service Commission's office over cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's alleged involvement in the cash-for-jobs scandal in the commission. Akhil was later released from Basistha police station. "He (Akhil) and three other members of the KMSS who sat on a hunger strike opposite the IG prisons' office around 11am did not have permission to stage the hunger strike. So he was detained," a police source said.
The KMSS members were, however, released later in the evening.
