Bongaigaon: Supporters of a separate Bodoland state in Assam on Monday submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Rajnath Singh with signatures and thumb impressions made with blood as part of their movement.

The All Bodoland Students' Union (Absu) and its associated groups, the National Democratic Front of Boroland (Progressive) and People's Joint Action Committee for Bodoland Movement (PJACBM), staged three-hour sit-in from 10am on Monday at all the 10 sub-divisional headquarters in the Bodoland Territorial Areas District and 10 outside it, demanding Bodoland and constitutional rights for their communities in and outside the proposed Bodoland area.

Over 25,000 thumb impressions with blood were collected during the demonstration today from the 20 subdivisions before sending memoranda to the Prime Minister and home minister Rajnath Singh, Absu spokesperson Jayanta Basumatary said.

Nearly 300 Bodoland supporters in Dhemaji district staged a demonstration in front of Jonai sub-divisional office with the same demand.

Basumatary said the Bodo groups will organise a rally in New Delhi on November 28 and 29, resort to an indefinite economic blockade in the first week of December and would observe a hunger strike in the BTAD during the next Parliament session.

"We are sending the bloodstained thumb impressions to make the Centre feel that the demand for Bodoland has emerged from our heart and every drop of our blood cries for it,"Absu president Pramod Boro said.

The organisations have been demanding a separate Bodoland state, comprising the four districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri and some other parts of Assam which have a significant Bodo population, to ensure the protection of the community's interests.

"The Bodoland movement is one of the oldest movements in the country and needs special attention of the Centre but the current dispensation in Delhi seems to be neglecting it," Boro said.
